Visualising a successful urban transport system
Transport for London commissioned us to produce visualisations of the docking stations and the cycles for each of the proposed 55 sites in order obtain “buy-in” from each of the London Boroughs and their residents and to persuade a major sponsor to put their name and investment into the scheme.
Accessible, identifiable and practical
Working with TFL’s in-house design, engineering and communications team, we prepared a number of designs for the scheme and then the 3D visuals for the cycles, docking stations and payment terminals at each of the 55 sites. The visualisations showed exactly where the docking stations would be positioned in each of the sites throughout London and provided a very realistic image of what each would look like.
It was important to establish how the scheme would clearly look, even before any prototypes where built, in order for all the London borough’s planning departments to approve the designs and locations and join the collective scheme.
World class scheme
The Cycle Hire Scheme quickly attracted Barclays Bank as the sponsor. Barclays Cycle Hire launched to members at the end of July 2010 and to non-members on 3 December 2010. The scheme has proved popular with close to 22 million total cycle hire journeys since the scheme launched. With the south west expansion and introduction of new docking stations within the existing area TfL expects between 250,000 and 300,000 additional Barclays Cycle Hire journeys will take place each month.
Testimonial
"I have long held the view that a cyclised city is a civilised city, but if we are to get more Londoners on to two wheels rather than four we need to provide the facilities to help them do so".
